Nebraska Learns 2.0 Resolutions for 2015

I have that feeling that Christa wrote about - -of being buried at work and missing out on learning new things.  I got the book for the January book club and sadly, have only read a few chapters. We just finished an Inventory project at my branch so that was the main focus for this past month.  We also have our own Always Learning Leadership training online training through Versal which takes only 4 hours a month - and luckily can be done at home now that we have Lynda.com available through remote access. I'm almost caught up on that so I can start February's course on Productivity!  I know everyone says you need to schedule time for learning- and I've found that the only way to do that is first thing in the morning BEFORE opening email.  So my FIRST RESOLUTION for my learning is to schedule the first hour of my day on Thursdays and Fridays (typically the slowest days of the week at my branch) -for my learning!  SECOND RESOLUTION is to get started on using LAST PASS for my password management. I've heard it talked about, looked at it, but haven't done anything.  THIRD RESOLUTION is to spend less time in front of a computer screen.  My eyes are begging me to do this.  Here we go!

Thing #24: Following My Library..Should I feel like a stalker?

It is nice to know there are so many options for keeping track of what is being said in the virtual environment about whatever you want to keep on top of in today's information age. Omaha Public Library (OPL) has been focusing the past year on improving our customer service experience - -so the lesson in Thing #24 appears to be an excellent way to follow up on comments, both negative and positive!

I searched Twitter for "Omaha Public Libray" and found 4 "tweets" about us. Joe Gerstandt had Twitted " I HEART Omaha Public Library" --- He has 3721 followers - - so I guess that is a LOT of good press for us - thankfully he must have had a GOOD experience! I had created a Twitter account in 2007 but rarely used it so I signed in and responded to his twit with a thank you! I won't hold my breath waiting for a response back.

Also, OPL just subscribed to downloadable movies from Overdrive so THEY were spreading the word about that through their DigiBookMobile Twitter account! Lauritzen Gardens Tweet indicated that OPL was doing a storytime there - more positive press.


I have a Google account so I subscribed to Google Alerts about Omaha Public Library and also did a Bloglines citation search for us. Four of the items that popped up were a blog posts by mystery authors about coming to our Mayhem in the Midlands Mystery Conference that is currently being held.


OPL also has a Flickr account for the library, Omaha Public Library - Authorized. I added my e-mail and set up a feed. We'll see how that works. I hadn't looked at that feature before so it was interesting to see the comments that had been posted regarding our images. I also have someone working on doing some titling and tagging so this should be a good way of keeping track of what has been done and how that is progressing? We'll see.

Since all OPL public service staff rove and none of us except our manger have a computer we can call our own - I set up the RSS Feeds to come in through Internet Explorer on this particular computer, however, I am logged in with my personal log-in. It will be interesting to see if I can actually look at my feeds when I come back to work next week and log in on a different computer. If not, I guess I will try to set up the feeds through my Google account.
